With deciding championship games in both the Cape Cod League and Futures League taking place this past weekend, another busy season of summer collegiate baseball in New England has come to an end.
The recent postseason runs of August featured new and experienced title-winning franchises alike, including the back-to-back Cape champions in the Bourne Braves. Bourne won twice in Orleans to emerge victorious in a three-game series that finished in front of more than 7,000 fans Sunday at Eldredge Park.
After emerging as the clear best team in the NECBL’s Coastal Division and overall standings, the Newport Gulls won their first Fay Vincent Sr. Cup since 2014 after finishing a two-game sweep of the Bristol Blues last week. New to the winner’s circle is the Futures League’s Norwich Sea Unicorns, the first-place team which finished off their first-ever playoff appearance by beating a Vermont Lake Monsters club that has played for the crown in three consecutive years. Their celebration ensued after a 2-1 Sunday victory.
