You have to beat the best to be the best.
That is exactly what the Brewster Whitecaps did to clinch their second Cape Cod Baseball League championship in the last five seasons on Wednesday night.
After the Bourne Braves gave Fairfield left-hander Michael Sansone (Cheshire, Conn.) a five-run lead with which to work in the first inning, the home-standing Whitecaps came from behind to score four times in the seventh, earning a 10-6 win at Stony Brook Field that ended the title series against their fellow division champions in straight games.
A pair of New England native pitchers attending Atlantic Coast Conference schools did strong work on the way to victories. A late addition to the Brewster roster who made just three regular-season appearances, Wake Forest’s Brennen Oxford (Durham, N.H.) earned the deciding win with two innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.
