Nineteen of the top high school players in Massachusetts have been selected to represent the state at the 2023 Geico High School Baseball National Championship Series, which will pit All-Star teams from each state against each other during a tournament in Dallas, Texas, from June 27-30.
To qualify for the national championship event, Team Massachusetts will have to advance from a regional tournament that includes New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania on June 16 and 17 at Rutgers University. No other New England state besides Massachusetts will field a team. Team Massachusetts will play one regional tournament game on June 16 before playing a doubleheader on June 17. The winner of the regional will advance to the National Championship in Dallas, which will be televised on ESPN.
Each state’s All-Star team will have an 18-man roster, and five roster spots can change between the regional and national championship weekends. The head coach of the Massachusetts squad will be Braintree High coach Bill O'Connell, and his assistants will be Walpole High coach Chris Costello, BC High coach Steve Healy and Braintree assistant Jamie Walsh.
The team will include prep, private and public school players who reside in Massachusetts. Fifteen of the 18 roster spots must go to players in the Class of 2024. Up to three can go to players in the Class of 2025. O'Connell selected 19 players for the regional tournament in case a scheduling conflict or injury causes a player to withdraw. Here's a look at the 19 players selected.
