For Scott Oberg, baseball and adversity have so frequently gone hand-in-hand over the years.
While at UConn, the Tewksbury, Mass., native became a star reliever for the Huskies. Then he began to suffer a series of symptoms that left it difficult for him to walk, let alone throw a baseball. He eventually was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, which was — and continues to be — successfully treated with daily medication. Then came the elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery and cost Oberg his entire season at UConn in 2011.
Oberg believes that overcoming those early adversities ultimately helped to prepare him for the challenges of facing off against the best baseball hitters in the world.
