The Cape League is ‘extra special’ for New Englanders

By Joshua KumminsAugust 1, 2018

Everyone — especially Harwich Mariners manager Steve Englert — loves a "local boy makes good" story.

The longtime former Boston College and Northeastern assistant coach who is in his 17th year leading the Mariners believes that playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League is extra special to the New England folks.

"I think the kids that have grown up in New England appreciate it just a little bit more because they come in with an understanding of the league," Englert said. "It’s not that other guys don’t because everyone realizes it’s the best amateur league to play in, but it means just a little bit more having it in your own backyard."

Boston College outfielder Chris Galland sure feels that way.
