Two of New Hampshire's top prospects in the Class of 2025 are currently uncommitted after the Vanderbilt coaching staff rescinded offers.
Both Grant McCubrey (Nashua, N.H.) and Brendan Horne (Hooksett, N.H.) received calls in August from newly hired Vanderbilt assistant Jayson King, and the former Dayton University head coach broke the news that offers to play at the SEC powerhouse were no longer on the table. McCubrey, a right-handed pitcher, committed to Vanderbilt after his freshman year at Nashua South High. Horne, a shortstop, committed to Vandy after his sophomore season at Pinkerton Academy.
Both players are now the college recruiting equivalent of free agents, ranking at the top of the Class of 2025 among New England prospects. King told both players that the NCAA's recent rule change decreasing roster sizes from 40 to 34 in 2025-26 was the reason for the rescinded offers.
"I haven't even really gone over everything that happened, so this could be good," Horne said. "Basically, they didn't even come out to see me. They never had an opportunity to see me. I assume they saw on Twitter that I hit a home run at PG National (Showcase). I asked Coach King if I could have done anything different or if I did something to cause this. He said, 'No, honestly we had to make cuts to plan for the changes to roster sizes.'"
