BOSTON -- Regional championships aren’t won or lost in February.
In fact, UMass Boston had never, ever played a baseball game during the second month of the year before Wednesday, but the Beacons showed just what propelled them to the top in 2017 as defense of their Little East and New England crowns began.
After posting the eighth-best team ERA (3.09) in all of Division 3 baseball a year ago, the Beacons showed that this year’s club could boast one of the top offenses in New England. They opened the season by smacking the ball all over Monan Park, posting 22 hits — four more than they had in any game en route to the College World Series in 2017 — in a 20-1 win over Lasell College.
