Not all 90-mph fastballs are created equal, particularly for high school and prep prospects who are constantly in pursuit of the all-important metric for power pitchers. For draft prospects and college recruits, the most impressive 90-mph fastball comes at showcase events, where dozens of scouts are on hand to verify the radar gun reading. Next comes the in-game reading verified by a coach or traveling scout. We'll take your word for it, but we'd like to see it again.
The gray area where many more high school and prep prospects live is the self-reported 90-mph fastball. These 90-mph fastballs are usually posted to Twitter or Instagram by the actual pitcher. Sometimes, the numbers are vague (i.e. "fastball ranged from 86 to 88 mph, topped out up to 90 mph"). For the purposes of this list of high school and prep pitchers who have eclipsed the all-important 90-mph radar gun reading, we'll stick to the fastballs that have been verified by video or a second party.
If you're a pitcher -- or you know of a high school or prep pitcher -- who has eclipsed 90-mph on the radar gun who is not on this list, reach out by email ([email protected]) or social media. But remember -- show your receipts! We'd like to see video evidence or confirmation from a qualified second party.
Here's a list of 31 high school or prep players in New England who have touched 90 mph on the radar gun.
