College coaches will readily admit that one of the most difficult parts of the job is projecting how a high school freshman or sophomore will perform three or four years down the road. Nonetheless, it's an essential part of the job for recruiting purposes, especially now that more and more underclassmen receive and accept offers from recruiters of top programs.
If a college coach doesn't feel comfortable projecting that far in advance, he better feel comfortable with his own staff's ability to develop a player at the college level because he's going to miss out on most of the top high school prospects, who often commit to colleges by the end of their sophomore seasons.
