Many prep school coaches agree that the benefit of having a solid catcher in a team's arsenal can be a game-changer. Catchers are widely considered an extension of the coach, often viewed as a team leader.
Catchers are the ones who assist with defensive positioning, set up locations for pitchers, and, if given clearance, call the pitches. If a catcher happens to be above-average in blocking balls, framing pitches, and consistently controlling an opposing team's running game, that serves as an added bonus.
New England Baseball Journal spoke with preparatory school coaches in regards to their catchers heading into the 2021 season. Coaches opined about the strengths of their respective backstops.
