Wheaton College storms to College World Series

At the beginning of May, even cracking the NCAA tournament field seemed like a pipe dream for head coach Eric Podbelski’s Wheaton College club.

However, anything is possible, and the Lyons weren’t going to let a miraculous second chance go to waste. A couple of weeks — and lucky breaks — later, they were in the NCAA tournament field, then champions of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, and then on to the College World Series for the third time.

"I never lost confidence in our team and what we were capable of," said Podbelski, the Lyons’ 21st-year skipper. "I knew that our team was one that had potential to get better and better as the season went, and we played some of our best baseball when it mattered most."
