Yale’s Benny Wanger transitions from slugger to closer

By Dan GuttenplanJune 1, 2018

Yale junior Benny Wanger doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about things like his role or his position. He’ll find a way to make an impact one way or another.

This year, Wanger (Newton, Mass.) has been lights-out as a closer for Yale — earning six saves while posting a 1.08 ERA in 25 innings. This comes on the heels of a sophomore season in which he served as a middle-of-the-order bat for Yale in its run to the school’s first Ivy League championship in 23 years.

"It’s been different," Wanger said. "I worked into the closer role and stopped hitting. Fortunately, I’ve done very well as a pitcher."
