The final opening date on a New England baseball fan’s summer calendar is upon us. Sunday marks the opening of Cape Cod Baseball League action for 2022. “The stars of tomorrow shine tonight” from Sunday, June 12 through Tuesday, August 2, with the eight-team playoffs following for approximately one week’s time.
This season will be a complete return to normalcy across the league from Wareham to Orleans, as the schedule includes a full 44 games, off-site games at minor league parks in Hartford, Conn., and Worcester, Mass., as well as the first All-Star Game since 2019. The midsummer classic is scheduled for Saturday, July 23 at Wareham’s Spillane Field.
As is typical in the summer landscape, rosters are fluid and change especially throughout the first few weeks of the season as Division 1 programs finish their runs towards Omaha and the College World Series. Thus, many players will not be available to their respective teams at the start and others look to make a name for themselves while on temporary contracts.
The first of our two-part series of Cape League previews covers the East Division, including the defending champion Brewster Whitecaps.
