Former Phillips Andover coach Kevin Graber appears to be making his mark quickly in the Chicago Cubs organization.
The New England prep school coaching legend received his second promotion of the 2023 season last week, becoming acting manager of the Chicago Cubs' Double-A affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies.
Graber left Andover last October to become complex coordinator at the Cubs' spring training facility in Mesa, Ariz. Just a few weeks before spring training, Graber received a bump to field coordinator, giving him responsibility for the organization's spring training design for minor-leaguers. His promotion to Double-A acting manager came last week when he was with the Smokies as a roving instructor.
"It was a little bit unexpected," Graber said. "You never know when opportunity will knock. One of the things I've always preached to my players is taking care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves. This whole time, I've been focused on the task right in front of me. What I've found is that by paying attention to detail and doing a good job, good things tend to happen."
