Heading into the 2023 season, chances were good that pitcher Mike Burrows was going to get his first shot at the major league level. Selected in the 11th round of the 2018 MLB Draft right out of Waterford High School in Connecticut, Burrows has always been considered a high-level prospect. This is evidenced by the fact that the Pittsburgh Pirates have Burrows protected on their 40-man roster despite him still being in the midst of a recovery from Tommy John surgery last April.
Burrows is slated to return to the field in mid-to-late spring as a starter.
He will bring a quartet of pitches that are highlighted by a nifty slider, a recently developed changeup, and a fastball that previously touched the upper 90s and may even gain velocity post-surgery.
We recently caught up with Burrows to get his thoughts on how to attack a hitter and how to compete against players with more experience.
