The Hamden Hall Hornets once again flexed their muscle over the weekend by knocking off Winchendon School 4-3 in the title tilt of the NEPSAC Small School championship, played at Fitton Field at Holy Cross on Saturday.
After losing to Brunswick in the Fairchester Athletic Association championship game a week ago, the Hornets responded in a huge way vs. Winchendon. Hamden Hall repeats as New England Class B Large Tournament champion a couple of weeks after clinching the FAA regular-season title.
"Playing so many big FAA games really helped this team,'' said Hamden Hall coach Brad Chernovetz, now in his fourth season. "I think going back to the FAA championship game this year, we knew we could play with anyone. We start so many young guys, and they were not caught up in the moment being at Holy Cross."
The Hornets finished their outstanding season with an overall mark of 18-7. In reaching the Small School final, they knocked off St. Luke's School (6-5) and King's-Edgehill School out of Windsor, Nova Scotia (3-0), in the earlier rounds.
